Fukt Hus…..
Sunday, December 13th, 2009Liked this title because it sort of describes our house in 2 languages. Actually it is not very fukt at the moment, it’s quite warm and dry inside. It means damp house.
Today I struggled to get a tarp over the small “Heidi house” we have. I felt like I was in a scene out of Thomas Hardy’s “Far from a Madding Crowd” when Gabriel Oak was trying to cover the hay ricks in a storm. The only difference was there was no storm, although snow is forecast tomorrow, it was not a hay rick and it was not dark! So only a very slight similarity!
We have foundations in the kitchen now ready for blocks to support the joists so we need to decide on flooring. Oak is very expensive and we are looking at softwood as well – we need to decide soon! Hopefully the plumber will come tomorrow as we need to think of drainage, and plumbing before the floor goes down.
Tomorrow I will put a hat on the earth cellar to try and stop any more moisture getting into the lovely stone arches which hold the roof up. Snow is forecast tomorrow, Tuesday and Thursday so I want to do it before that comes.
As I am being literary, I will include a poem which made a big impact on me as a girl………..

home to the building site
Saturday, December 12th, 2009Ive still got a bad cold and when I arrived at the farm yesterday it had been transformed into a buildïng site, which is what you expect I suppose when you get builders in. We’ve had a digger here the last few days to dig a french drain around the house and a duckpond. The work is going quite well. Debby was impressed that Bjorn used dowsing sticks to find where the electrical cables were so he didn’t accidentally dig them up although he still managed to cut the telephone wire, which we are not using anyway.
I only have to go into the office one more week now and then I don’t have to go in again till the 11th of January and I just booked my flight back to Copenhagen from Heathrow on the 10th of January which only cost 64 pounds amazingly. So I’m pretty much all set for xmas now. I don’t feel like doing much today, I think Debby and I will take a small walk down to the river and that’s about it. Maybe get some frozen elk out of the freezer and cook it up for our tea…
A bit of light relief
Tuesday, December 8th, 2009I’m feeling a bit like I’m getting a cold now, pretty rubbish actually. Its that time of year that all the contracting companies bring in huge baskets of sweets to work. A great Swedish tradition that means you feel completely bloated and yucky by the end of the day. Its great that they think of us when they buy themselves that new ferrari though.
One of the guys in my team used to be a bit of a raver in Manchester, he seems to have calmed down now. He admitted hes just written a Blackberry application for the Tory party. A far cry from podium dancing half naked with dyed green hair, which is what I get the impression he used to spend a lot of time doing. Also he felt so terrible the day after coming out with the rest of us he had to take two beta blockers and a Valium to get through the day. And I thought I was bad.
Heres some links he gave me, one is to his site with music that hes made and the other is his friends MySpace page. I think his friends music is better.
new iPhone app
Monday, December 7th, 2009Ok, I dont know if any of you out there have an iPhone, but my friend just released his new app and i’m helping him with the marketing, you can find it and a promotional video here, and this is a REAL thing not like the pomegranate, well done for all of you who realized it wasn’t real. Its only 69p or something.
2012
Thursday, December 3rd, 2009I’m going to the cinema tonight to see 2012, its about the end of the world which is what they are always talking about in Ransbysatter, the end of the world that is, not the film. We are working on this really cool phone here at the moment. It has a built in harmonica, here is a link Pomegranate Phone I think its much better than iPhone or Blackberry. You need flash to view the website unfortunately but its worth it.
Real workers now!
Thursday, December 3rd, 2009Well, here at base camp, the builders have started. Proper destruction has started! so far a bit more wall is missing, an acro-prop is in, some of the bottom log has been hacked out and we have unblocked the chimney! The chimney has 3 “tubes” and this one was really wet so they have put a fan in front of it downstairs to dry it all out.It will be good to be able to light a fire in it in the not too distant future.
Last night was the coldest here so far. I went to bed when my thermometer said -11 outside and 10 inside! Moving around was ok, but sitting still inside was challenging. I resorted to sitting in bed and reading! Also another challenge was using the outside toilet at -11. At least the toilet roll did not freeze! I also got my hand stuck to the front door handle as it is made of metal! And it is not even cold yet!
